The Hydro~Geo Workshop is a proud sponsor of the

LUMINARY
LECTURE SERIES

The Luminary Lecture Series was created as an educational outreach opportunity presented by the Texas Hydro~Geo Workshop and the Greater Edwards Aquifer Alliance. The series is designed for professionals and students working in the Environmental Field. The Luminary Series provides continuing educational credits for professional certifications. Future presentations will focus hydrogeology, geology, environmental science, and geobiohydrology.

Please note the lecture is a separate function and does not take place at nor is part of the Hydro~Geo Workshop.

The Luminary Lecture

Dr. Vince Cronin

Dr. Cronin will present a one-day workshop on “Revolutions, Revision, Rights and Responsibilities in the Geosciences.” When he was born in early 1957, no human-made satellites orbited Earth. Most geoscientists were “fixists” and thought climate variations were defined mainly by Milankovitch cycles that resulted in periodic ice ages. Since then, geoscience has undergone two revolutions — plate tectonics and global warming — that have altered our views dramatically. Those new paradigms continue to evolve through new data and revision of initial models. The latter part of the workshop will focus on practical geoethics in applied geosciences.

Discussion Focus

  • The plate tectonic revolution as viewed from more than half a century later.
  • How geophysical/geodetic networks used to describe earthquakes and lithospheric motions, as well as insights from rock-deformation experiments, can provide insights about present-day stresses and fracture development in continental crust.
  • Solution of the three-plate problem and revision of old plate-tectonic ideas.
  • A primer on global warming, its impact on society, and the changing role of engineering geoscientists, hydrologists, and hydrogeologists working in the public interest.
  • Community and personal perspectives on geoethics for applied geoscience.

About the Speaker

Dr. Vince Cronin is an emeritus professor of geoscience and an award-winning educator, having taught a wide range of graduate and undergraduate courses at two research universities. He worked to advance geoscience education in collaboration with SERC, UNAVCO, and IRIS. His research has included landslide studies, identifying active seismogenic faults using earthquake data and lidar-based geomorphic analysis, GPS geodesy, and plate kinematics. Notably, he solved the three-plate problem in plate tectonics. For nearly 30 years, Vince has been instrumental in promoting geoethics and currently serves on the executive board of the International Association for Promoting Geoethics (IAPG) as the North American coordinator.

Vince is also the editor and principal revision author of the AGI/NAGT Laboratory Manual in Physical Geology (11th through 13th editions, Pearson) and is currently writing a quantitative primer on plate kinematics. He was the Jahns Distinguished Lecturer for 2022-23, representing GSA and AEG. In 2023, he received the Ben H. Parker Memorial Distinguished Service Medal from AIPG.
