The Hydro~Geo Workshop is a proud sponsor of the

LUMINARY SERIES

The Luminary Series was created as an educational outreach opportunity presented by the Texas Hydro~Geo Workshop and the Greater Edwards Aquifer Alliance. The series is designed for professionals and students working in the Environmental Field. The Luminary Series provides continuing educational credits for professional certifications. Future presentations will focus hydrogeology, geology, environmental science, and geobiohydrology.

Please note the lecture is a separate function and does not take place at nor is part of the Hydro~Geo Workshop.

2024 Speaker Coming Soon

2023 Guest Speaker – Dr. Dorothy J. Vesper

Dr. Dorothy Vesper will present a one-day workshop exploring how subsurface mines compare to karst systems – and what we can learn by applying our karst techniques in this pseudo-karst setting. Some topics to be covered include:

  1. Coal mines as pseudo-karst. How are these systems similar to karst, and how do they differ? Can we learn more about both systems by comparing them?
  2. A geochemical comparison of coal mines and karst. Coal mines as analogs for sulfate-weathered karst systems.
  3. Carbon export from coal mines – using karst techniques to understand why the mines produce CO2.
  4. Seasonal temperature as an indicator of aquifer vulnerability.
  5. Contamination of karst aquifers – what we know, what we don’t know.
  6. The history, mystery, and science of springs.
  7. Ethics in the geosciences.

Dr. Dorothy J. Vesper LUMINARY SERIES Caver in a Coal Mine

Dr. Vesper is a Professor of Geology at West Virginia University. She has a B.S. degree (Geology) from Juniata College, and M.S. (Environmental Pollution Control) and Ph.D. (Geosciences) degrees from Penn State. She’s broadly trained as a geochemist and hydrogeologist with a focus on applied problems. Her perspective stems from a combination of geochemistry research and more than 10 years in the environmental consulting industry.
Dr. Vesper’s current research is focused on aqueous and sediment geochemistry in both karst settings and coal mines. Active projects look at contaminant fate and transport in karst terrains, the geochemistry of cave sediments, temperature as a proxy for sustainability of spring waters, carbon and rare-earth element fluxes from coal mines, release of CO2 from coal mines, and springs. A native of central Pennsylvania, she considers the Appalachian Valley and Ridge Province her home.
